Risky Business - Running Your Business Online

Risky Business - Running Your Business Online

A business that you build online can be stable or it can be a house of cards depending on how you approach it. It is often tempting to start your business using social media as it is free and you can always change later right? Imagine building your reputation, your following and your income on a social media platform followed by a sudden and immediate cancellation of your page...suddenly you are at the mercy of the business who runs the social media platform and their whims. This is not something that happens to people who only do the wrong thing, in fact our business once had our facebook page unpublished because we "didn't set it up correctly" and we were suspected of running a fake account. This was, admittedly, an error on our part due to inexperience which cost us followers and business but more recently controversial social media businesses are being unpublished due to the behaviour of the administrators, followers and mistakes made by automated social media bots identifying content as inappropriate.

You could say that this would never happen to you and why worry about it? One issue that is commonly not considered is if this happened to your business, do customers have other ways they can engage with your business? It is not a 5 minute fix to start up an online store or create a website and how do you let your former followers know that you have done this? You would most likely pour the majority of your efforts into trying to get your profile restored...meanwhile your customers and followers are disengaging or have not even noticed your sudden disappearance... It is proactive and important to put in place measures that insulate you from social media whims, it then becomes sacrificial with your profile being unpublished and replaced the next day without impacting on your business functionality as significantly, as you would still be searchable. A business that can still sell but has lost one advertising route can be more easily regrown and likely has other advertising methods in place, but a business that ceases to trade or advertise online is crippled. Ultimately, weigh the costs and see for yourself because even a thousand dollars a year invested is generally cheaper than the cost of rebuilding your brand and your following after losing your one and only business platform.

A great recent example was the international business built on a simple premise that found itself needing media pressure to get back in business...unfortunately not a solution available to all of us:
